Lately developed engraving methods enable us to reproduce extremely filigree structures. The desired embossing surface is transferred to a 3D pattern by a scanning process; the pattern is then available as a digital data record similar to that obtained by computer tomography, and can be processed in "slices". The digitized structure can now be recre-
ated in the Tru Image process on a steel cylinder with any desired degree of fineness. At the same time, the data record is transferred to a steel roller with elastomeric coating by the Fine Line laser technique. The new techniques offer significant benefits for hot embossing, and represent a serious alternative to the proven "Galvano" technique.
